Project Description

Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES), operator of the metro-area wastewater collection and treatment system, plans to build a new lift station in Fridley (L32A) to replace the existing and aging lift station in Brooklyn Park (L32).

The existing lift station in Brooklyn Park is 50 years old and has reached the end of its useful life. It lacks adequate storage, leading to sewer backups and odors. This site will be used as an odor control facility and to access pipes that cross the river.

The new lift station will be located on the east side of the Mississippi River in Fridley. The new facility will preserve wastewater system assets, improve system reliability, and accommodate community growth.

Map of Fridley L32A project showing lift stations on either side of the Mississippi River - the existing one near the west bank, and the future one on the east bank, with pipes under the river shown between them.

A site plan for the project was developed from 2019 through 2021, with design occurring between 2022 and 2024, and construction occurring between 2025 and 2027.

Timeline of project schedule. 2019 to 2021 is planning, 2022 to 2024 is design, and 2025 to 2027 is construction.

The new lift station will pump wastewater from the local wastewater collection system into the MCES regional sanitary sewer system. A series of regional sewers then conveys the wastewater to the Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant in Saint Paul.

The lift station will include communications equipment to monitor pumping equipment, and backup power to maintain reliable, uninterrupted operation.
