New homes are replacing farmland in the fast-growing Elko and New Market area of southeastern Scott County.
This “beehive-style” round barn, on a farm just west of New Market on Cty. Hwy. 2, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Elko’s largest recent development is Boulder Pointe, an 18-hole public golf course surrounded by single-family and town homes.
The New Prague School District is building a new elementary school in New Market, about a mile west of downtown. The building has capacity for 700 kindergarten through fifth grade students, and the site features room for expansion.
The historic service station on Main St. in New Market was built in 1934, just two years before the father of the current owner, Mike Kaufenberg, bought the business in 1936. A scene was filmed here for the 2001 film “Wooly Boys,” which starred Peter Fonda and Kris Kristofferson.
