Between 2000 and 2030, the Metropolitan Council projects that the Twin Cities seven-county area will grow by nearly 1 million people and 470,000 households.
The Council’s 2030 Regional Development Framework and the policy plans that implement it are intended to help accommodate the region’s growth in an orderly, efficient manner and guide the expansion of four regional systems: transportation, aviation, water resources (including wastewater collection and treatment) and regional parks and open space. In 2004, for the first time, transportation and aviation were combined in a single document.
In September 2005, the Council mailed “systems statements” to each community in the seven-county area, informing local officials how their community is affected by the Council’s regional system plans. These statements are intended to help communities prepare or update their local comprehensive plans, which – under state law – must be consistent with regional plans. Local communities will have until 2008 to submit their local comprehensive plans for Council review.
Copies of the regional plans can be accessed through the links on this page. Paper copies of these documents may be obtained by e-mailing the Council at data.center@metc.state.mn.us or by calling 651-602-1140.
Local officials and staff members who have questions about their community's system statement should contact the sector representative for their area.
