Metropolitan Council seeks applicants for advisory committee on special transportation services

Applications due end of August

ST. PAUL - August 5, 2008 - The Metropolitan Council is taking applications for two vacancies on the Transportation Accessibility Advisory Committee (TAAC), which advises the Council on management policies for special transportation services in the region. The TAAC was created by the Legislature and must include riders and advocates for older people and the disability community, as well as representatives of service providers and other appropriate agencies.

Committee membership is sought from:

TAAC District B: including the Hennepin County cities of Chanhassen, Deephaven, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Greenwood, Hopkins, Long Lake, Minnetonka, Minnetonka Beach, Minnetrista, Mound, Orono, St. Bonifacius, Shorewood, Spring Park, Tonka Bay, Wayzata, and Woodland; all of Carver County and the portion of Scott County in the metro area.

TAAC District G: including the City of St. Paul and the Dakota County cities of Lilydale, Mendota, Mendota Heights, Sunfish Lake and West St. Paul.

At least half of the committee must be certified under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and be active users of public ground transportation in the metro area. Terms are four years, concurrent with the Council’s, and would expire in January 2011. Appointments are made by Council Chair Peter Bell and the Council.      

TAAC members serve without compensation, but may be reimbursed for travel expenses to attend meetings. Meetings are currently held on the first Wednesday of each month. The deadline for applications is Aug. 28, 2008.

The Metropolitan Council is the regional planning organization for the seven-county Twin Cities area. The Council runs the regional bus and light rail system, collects and treats wastewater, coordinates regional water resources, plans regional parks and administers funds that provide housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income individuals and families. The Council board is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the governor.
