February 9, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - (Feb. 9) - The Metro Transit Police Department has a new leader.

Deputy Chief of Transit Police David Indrehus was promoted to Chief of Police by Tom Weaver, regional administrator of the Metropolitan Council. As an operating agency of the Met Council, Metro Transit operates most of the public transportation in the Twin Cities region, including 113 bus routes and the Hiawatha light-rail line.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Dave’s skill and experience lead our police operations at this important time,” said Weaver. “He has been instrumental in shaping the continued professional development and effectiveness of our police force these past four years and has shown a laser-like commitment to improving the safety and security of our customers and employees.”

Indrehus leads a department of some 125 full-time and part-time police officers, who patrol buses, trains and transit routes. The transit police department works closely with local police departments and the State Patrol to ensure a positive riding environment for customers who ride the transit network nearly 242,000 times each business day.

Indrehus joined the Metro Transit police department in 2002 as a captain. In 2005, he was promoted to deputy chief, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department. He served as interim chief since the retirement of Chief Jack Nelson last fall.

Indrehus has more than 35 years of experience in the public safety profession. He finished a 30-year career with the Minneapolis Police Department in 1999, leaving after assignments as Inspector of Police and commander of the largest of five Minneapolis precincts. During his tenure with the Minneapolis police force, he led the internal affairs division, was training director and was an investigator/technician with the bomb squad.

Metro Transit is an operating agency of the Metropolitan Council. Customers boarded Metro Transit buses and trains 73.8 million times last year, the highest annual ridership in 22 years.
