Generalized Land Use for Counties, Cities and Townships in the Seven - County Area, 1970 to 2005

Referenced below are statistical tables containing historic land use data for local communities (cities and townships), counties and the entire Twin Cities Metropolitan Area.

The Metropolitan Council began collecting generalized land use data for the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area in 1970 and has been updating it approximately every five years since then. The data are based upon the actual use of the land as interpreted from aerial photos into broad land use categories.

Starting in 1997, county parcel and assessor data have been used to help determine land use and local units of government have been asked to review the data. These new procedures have improved the overall accuracy of the land use inventories. However, as a result, some of the change in land use between land use inventory years (e.g., 2000, 2005) is due to improvements in the data collection and interpretation procedures rather than actual changes in land usage. These improvements in data and collection procedures have also allowed the Council to collect data with greater detail to better meet Council planning needs. In other words, additional land use categories in more recent inventories have also affected the trends for some land use categories between inventory years. Please refer to the Notes for Comparing Generalized Land Use Data and Metadata for Historic Land Use Data listed below for more specific details.

Since 1990, the land use data have been displayed in the tables in relation to the Council’s Metropolitan Urban Services Area (MUSA). The MUSA designates areas either currently receiving urban services (i.e., sewer service) or that are scheduled to receive urban services by a specified date. It is important to note that the boundary for the MUSA is subject to ongoing adjustments that respond to changes in local comprehensive plans and projected service needs. The land use numbers for 1990 and 1997 MUSA are both based on a projected 2000 MUSA, while the land use numbers for 2000 and 2005 MUSA are based on a projected need for urban services by 2020. Recent changes in how the Urban Services Areas are administered have contributed to adjustments in how the land use numbers are calculated for certain communities. Please refer to the Land Use Tables Footnotes for more information regarding MUSA land use numbers and other supplemental data included in the land use tables.
