Wastewater Services

Treated Wastewater

Metropolitan Council Environmental Services ( MCES ), a division of the Metropolitan Council, operates and maintains eight wastewater treatment plants in the Twin Cities seven county area. Industries and the vast majority of homes in the Twin Cities metropolitan area are connected to one of eight wastewater treatment plants through an extensive network of sewer pipes. Whenever someone takes a shower, flushes a toilet, or runs the washing machine, the resulting wastewater is carried through a pipe off the property into a municipal sanitary sewer pipe. That pipe, in turn, is connected to a regional sewer interceptor, and finally to the wastewater treatment plant. Both the regional interceptor system and all eight treatment plants are operated and maintained by MCES.
