Hastings Wastewater Treatment Plant

Located in the City of Hastings, the Hastings Plant in 1998 earned a national "Platinum Award" for five consecutive years of perfect compliance with clean water discharge permits. It serves about 18,000 residents in Hastings and portions of surrounding Marshan Township, discharging an average of 1.7 million gallons per day to the Mississippi River.

The original Hastings Plant was built in 1955. The new plant was expanded and renovated between 1983-1986 at a cost of $8.3 million; 75 percent of this amount was provided by the Federal Government and 15 percent by the State of Minnesota. Odor control for the aeration tanks was added in 1989. The Hastings Plant employs biological treatment technology and is designed to treat an average wastewater flow of 2.9 million gallons per day.

The plant has adequate capacity to meet sewer service area needs through 2020. However, because of its age and location, MCES plans to relocate the Hastings Plant in approximately 10 years.
