| Project #8064, Metro Electrical Cable Replacement | |
Description: This project will replace high voltage electrical power distribution cables which are over 30 years old and serve the critical equipment in the blower building and effluent pump station. The project will replace the first of two feeders for each of the respective unit substations. This project is the first phase of the four-phase plan to replace electrical power distribution feeders at the Metro Plant. |
There are approximately 180 medium voltage cables serving various loads of the plant. Almost 68% of them are Paper Insulated Oil-Impregnated Lead Covered (PILC) cables. The PILC cables are 30 to 40 years old and they are approaching the end of their useful life. The major problem with PILC cables is deterioration of the cable insulation. In the last couple of years, the Metropolitan WWTP had a number of PILC failures. Not only were the replacements/repairs very expensive, but it was difficult find qualified contractors to do the work.
