2008 - 2017 Capital Improvement Program

Project #8035, Interceptor System Standby Power Improvements

Description:

The MCES currently owns and operates 63 pump stations. Stationary generator sets are located at  34 of the pump stations. In addition there are another 25 portable generator sets located  throughout the system. This project includes the replacement of the generator sets that have  reached the end of their useful life or have significant maintenance problems.

Purpose and Justification
:

Most generator sets used for back-up power at pump stations have exceeded their useful life expectancy of 25 years. In recent years the reliability of these generator sets has become a concern as there has been increased failures as well as increased maintenance required on the lift station generator sets. Failure of a generator sets in time of need could result in sewage overflow and basement backups throughout the system. Also during periods of high power demand, the MCES utilizes these generators at the lift stations in lieu of taking power from the grid per agreement with the power company. The MCES is penalized if generator power can not be used at these sites during peak power demands.

Impact on O&M Costs:

This project will reduce the corrective maintenance required to keep the existing generator sets operable. New generator sets should also be more efficient, quieter, and should use less fuel.
