Project #8012, Systemwide Odor Control Improvements

 

Description:

This project provides for capital improvements to address odor problems in the MCES' conveyance  and treatment system. Improvements include the collection and treatment of sewer gases with  biofilter, chemical scrubbers, and/or carbon odor scrubbers; the installation of chemical feed  facilities to control odors in critical areas of the system; and improvements to the airflow dynamics  in large interceptors. The odor control improvement projects are proposed to provide for more  effective operation and maintenance, and reduce odor from MCES facilities.

Purpose and Justification:

The MCES is committed to being a good neighbor. Unresolved odor problems originating from our system tarnish our reputation. This project strengthens our ongoing commitment to work with our customers to investigate the source of odor complaints and develop a solution to correct the problem. This project provides funding and a systematic approach for capital improvements for odor control. It will provide for more effective operation and maintenance, and reduce odor from MCES facilities.

Impact on O&M Costs:

O&M costs will increase as a result of the odor control improvements. Cost increases will occur in both chemicals and electricity usage.

Potential Odor Control Improvement Projects

Project Number & Description

o Project #8012xx, Odor Control Improvements - this project will eliminate or reduce odors at four problem sites in the Metro area. The sites are located at Lift Stations L-32 and L-34; at the West Meters; and at Nawadaha & Hiawatha. The estimated cost of this project is $2,400,000.
