Seventeen percent of rail riders and fifteen percent of bus riders surveyed used Metropass to board transit. Metropass is an employer-offered transit benefit.

  • Forty-three percent of those surveyed on light rail used a bus transfer to complete their trip. Most train customers – 80 percent – have at least one car available for their use.

  • Eighty percent of those surveyed on buses ride more than five days a week; 59 percent of light-rail riders fall in the same category of use. Most bus customers (77 percent) said they ride during rush hour, up slightly from 2005.

  • Nearly all rail riders, 99 percent, said they feel safe riding during the day; 79 percent feel safe riding at night. For bus riders, 95 percent said they feel safe riding during the day and 80 percent feel safe at night.

  • Only 32 percent of rail riders and 27 percent of bus riders used cash to pay their fare. Stored value cards (on buses), 31-day passes, Metropass and other prepaid or debit options represented the majority of payment methods.

  • The majority of both bus and rail riders have used transit to get to the State Fair. Fifty-five percent of train riders have ridden LRT to a sporting event.

  • Customers gave good to excellent ratings in several areas of service, including route maps, staff at Metro Transit stores, automated departure time information, and information on the agency’s website, in printed bus schedules and in TAKEOUT, the monthly customer newsletter.

  • Respondents indicated an increasing interest in using technology to gather schedule and real-time information by portable electronic devices, including cell-phones and hand-held computers. Rail customers said their primary source for transit information is the agency’s website.

The chart below shows how those surveyed would have made their trip if transit were unavailable; the greatest number would drive alone.
