Peggy Leppik
Metropolitan Council Member, District 6

Peggy Leppik was appointed to the Metropolitan Council by Governor Tim Pawlenty in 2003 and reappointed in 2007. Leppik represents District 6, which includes Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope, St. Louis Park, and southwest Minneapolis.

Leppik served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1991 to 2003, and is the former chair of the House Higher Education Finance Committee. She is also a former member of the Golden Valley Planning Commission. As a Council member, Leppik chairs the Environment Committee and also serves on the Transportation Committee. She is the Council’s representative on the Transportation Advisory Board.

“The Council’s biggest challenge today is to provide the highest level of service we can given the budget restraints we face,” said Leppik. “This is particularly true for transit. As the economy strengthens, I hope we can expand service and achieve the Council’s goal of a 50 percent ridership increase by 2020.”

Leppik cited the Council’s ongoing program to improve the reliability, speed and convenience of transit service. A restructuring plan was recently approved for Sector 5 (south Minneapolis, Bloomington, Richfield, Edina and St. Paul south of I-94 and west of downtown) to facilitate cross-town travel and connections with light rail transit. The service will be implemented in April 2004.

Leppik and her husband, Ilo, live in Golden Valley. They have three adult children and four grandchildren. Peggy enjoys hiking, gardening, canoeing, kayaking, biking (especially on regional trails), and attending theater. Leppik has a B.A. in sociology from Smith College in Massachusetts.
