Regional Bicycle System Study

In an effort to improve the region’s on-street and off-road biking facilities, the Council, with MnDOT, conducted a Regional Bicycle System Study in 2013 - 2014. The study provides the technical basis for updating the bicycling section of the region’s Transportation Policy Plan (TPP)and proposes regional priorities for planning and investment in bicycle infrastructure.

Purpose

The purpose of the study was to better understand of the bicycle component of the regional transportation system, including examining how on-street bikeways and off-road trails interact to serve regional transportation trips. The study used local data and public stakeholder input to:

  • Identify key regional destinations

  • Develop a set of guiding principles for identifying regional bicycle corridors

  • Propose a Regional Bicycle Transportation Network with a set of Priority Regional Bicycle Transportation Corridors, and

  • Propose a framework for monitoring the performance of the regional bicycle transportation system on an ongoing basis.
