Transit, partnerships stressed at State of the Region

Transit holds the key to a successful and prosperous region, said Council Chair Susan Haigh at the State of the Region Jan. 18. Haigh highlighted the role of transit in economic development and job creation at the event, which was attended by several hundred people. See

 

Governor Dayton announces new jobs proposal

Governor Mark Dayton released his bonding proposal for the 2012 legislative session, building on his jobs plan to get Minnesotans back to work.  The Governor’s bonding proposal is focused on making the kind of long-term investments proven to create jobs. The proposal includes $25 million for Southwest Light Rail Transit.   See Gov. Dayton's press release.

 


Metro Cities task force affirms regional governance

A January report by the Metro Cities Task Force on Regional Governance supports the need for regional government, and the continued integration of regional operations and planning. The report affirms appointment of Metropolitan Council members by the governor. It also recommends staggered, four-year terms for Council members and strengthened local government involvement in the selection process. Metro Transit 2011 ridership tops 80 million for the second time in 30 years

Customers boarded Metro Transit buses and trains nearly 81 million times in 2011 – an increase of 2.7 million rides (3.5%) over 2010. This marks the fifth consecutive year ridership has topped 76 million – a number not previously achieved since 1982. More about Metro Transit's ridership record.

Dayton Administration seeks new ways to finance better highways, transit systems

Gov. Mark Dayton has directed Minnesota Department of Transportation Commissioner Tom Sorel to establish the Commissioner’s Transportation Finance Advisory Group.  Noting that Minnesota’s highways, roads, bridges and public transit systems have suffered decline, Governor Dayton seeks to reverse this trend, starting by gathering recommendations from this Advisory Group.  See Gov.
