Community involvement: Falcon Heights

To define its vision, Falcon Heights established a 14-member steering

committee in 2006. The committee led eight community meetings, held in February 2007, which attracted 80 people to answer 13 questions about living in Falcon Heights.

Curtis Field in Falcon Heights

Curtiss Field is one of four city parks that residents of Falcon Heights say they value.

“The last time we updated our comp plan (in 1998), we focused on procedure,” said City Administrator Justin Miller. “This time we are actually doing a complete rewrite with extensive public participation.”

What did the city learn?

  • Falcon Heights residents like living 10 minutes from both downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul.
  • They are concerned about traffic congestion, and want more alternatives like bike paths, sidewalks and increased bus service.
  • They value the parks and open spaces that give the city a rural feel.

What happens next? Falcon Heights is conducting a survey of residents about local parks and open spaces. The information will be used to help the steering committee and staff draft an update to the parks and trails portion of the city’s comprehensive plan. Falcon Heights expects to have a draft of the comp plan ready for public review by the end of August.
